I have to admit that sometime I wonder why I put so much energy into jazz when only a small collection of the world’s population shares my passion. At the end of the day, I know the answer; my love for the music is more than enough to justify my investment. But I play music to connect with people, so I still lament the fact that I’m cutting myself off from a large piece of the world. I know I’m not the only musician that has wondered this same thing; generations of music have pushed the music in different directions to make that same connection. So maybe it’s time for me to start experimenting and push the tradition in some different directions; hold onto the music I love while transitioning into new directions. So this week, I’m taking Minor Run-Down, a great song by one of my bass heroes, Paul Chambers, and combining it with a funky groove and some home production. Let me know what you think!
