LATIN JAZZ SESSIONS: Satin Doll by Duke Ellington on Six String Bass & Double Bass
by on April 24, 2023 in Video

I’m celebrating Jazz Appreciation Month this year in the best way that I know how – by making some music! This Saturday April 29th will mark Duke Ellington’s 124th birthday, a momentous occassion indeed. When asked about jazz, most people – whether they are jazz fans or not – will be able to mention the name Duke Ellington. His brilliant compositions, long performance career, and major influence not only laid the foundation for the modern jazz world, but also shaped popular culture. We would not be where we are today in music without Duke Ellington and we need to remember that every year.

Duke wrote many songs – some well known and some lesser familiar with the general public – and I’ve chosen to pay tribute with a performance of one of Duke’s best known songs, Satin Doll. This was written in collaboration with his standard writing partner Billy Strayhorn and lyricist Johnny Mercer. The unforgettable melody and standard chord changes make this song a keeper. While it usually swings, I’ve chosen to play this as a cha cha cha, pushing it into the Latin Jazz realm. Of course, I’m playing this one with my Double Bass and my Six String Bass. Long live Duke Ellington – I hope you enjoy!
