LATIN JAZZ SESSIONS: Maiden Voyage by Herbie Hancock on Six String Bass Guitar & Double Bass
by on April 9, 2023 in Video

I’m celebrating Jazz Appreciation Month this year in the best way that I know how – by making some music! This Wednesday, jazz pianist and one of my heroes, Herbie Hancock, will be celebrating his 83rd birthday this Wednesday April 12th, so I wanted to look back on one of his classics. From his time as a sideman with Miles Davis to his funky fusion with The Headhunters and his trailblazing jazz as a solo artist, I’ve always loved Hancock’s joyous creative energy and fearless musical exploration. He’s been a musical icon that has embraced the future while building upon the lessons of the past; I have a huge respect for that type of broad musical acceptance and integrity. As we take time in the month of April to celebrate all things jazz, I’m thrilled to play some music from this inspiring artist.

I’ve decided to interpret one of Hancock’s all-time classics, the modal masterpiece “Maiden Voyage”. This is such a wide open song in every way – whether you’re talking about harmony, technique, or concept, there are just so many ways to go with this song. It utilizes long stretch of suspended chords and an etherial melody that just gives this song such a vibe. And of course, I needed to take this in my own direction, so I’ve put in a Latin Jazz context, framing this song around a Son Montuno. This was a Bass Collective venture, so I put it all together using both my Double Bass and my Six String Bass Guitar. This one is so fun, it’s got me excited about celebrating jazz – I hope it does the same for you!
