I’ve been looking for great melodies to serve as the basis for solo bass arrangements. And of course, when I’m thinking about great melodies, one of the best places to start is the music of Stevie Wonder. His compositions walk the line between pop and jazz, always finding the perfect balance of sophistication and public appeal that makes his songs unforgettable. I’ve got a lot of favorites from the Stevie book, so this was a hard choice.

I decided to start with a song that I remember playing on the radio when I was a teenager – I Just Called To Say I Love You. It’s a simple idea, but one that’s so poignant and relevant in today’s busy world. And it’s Stevie, so it’s a great melody, an unstoppable groove, and musical through and through. I had a great time working with this one – I might even take it a little further in the future – I hope you enjoy my solo bass arrangement of this Stevie Wonder classic!
