When you’re talking about legends of Latin Bass Playing, the name Bobby Rodriguez sits near the top of the list. The foundation behind Tito Puente for decades, his bass playing was always at the cutting edge of Latin music. With the ability to lay down an undeniably grooving tumbao while navigating jazz harmony, Rodriguez was a master of his craft. His knowledge of the clave was deep and instinctual, having played next to some of the music’s best percussionists for countless hours. Rodriguez influenced generations of bass players while setting the bar high for swing and taste on the instrument. There are many classic Rodriguez lines, but I choose one from a classic Tito Puente record – the unforgettable Dance Mania – its a beautiful study in tumbao that I enjoyd learning!
