As I venture further into ambient music, electronic textures, and six string bass improvisation, I’ve been struck by the contrast between human beings and machines making music. One one hand, they’re pretty similar – even though the computer may be outputting the electronic sounds, I’m the one programming it, so it’s not too different from a Bass Collective effort. On the other hand, the sonic textures are so different from the acoustic world that it inspires a completely different musical sensibility. So I started to think, what if I brought those worlds a little closer together? This is a baby step, but I’ve integrated some audio from the real world to start blending the textures . . . it did bring out some different ideas in my improvisation though. So I’ll be exploring this more in the future. For now, enjoy Man vs. Machine.
